OpenAI and Anthropic reveal how people actually use AI

In OpenAI’s case, they broke it down into visual categories like translation and programming. My take: Each category is probably a multi-billion dollar market where new AI products like Cursor and Lovable can be built.

1. Reve releases new image creator with strong editing features: The update combines four tools in one: an image creator with text rendering, a drag-and-drop editor, an AI assistant, and an API for integrations. It also introduces a new “layout representation,” a visual language that lets AI understand images with detailed precision. Creators can manipulate objects, combine multiple images, or work with the new AI assistant that can search the web. See it in action here.

2. Meta’s new glasses have reportedly leaked ahead of launch: An allegedly leaked YouTube video (now removed) reportedly revealed Ray-Ban–branded smart glasses with a heads-up display for notifications, navigation, and voice commands. The glasses were shown working with Meta’s sEMG wristband, allowing gesture control. The heads-up display, visible over the right eye only, reportedly supports Meta AI features and message input via finger swipes.

3. OpenAI launches GPT-5-Codex for smarter coding: The updated model adapts how long it “thinks” based on a task’s complexity, working up to a few hours on complex projects like refactors and code reviews. GPT‑5-Codex is now available across terminals, IDEs, GitHub, the web, and ChatGPT, with API access coming soon. The tool has already been a hit with developers, with some reportedly switching from Claude Code.

New studies from OpenAI and Anthropic show how people really use AI

We (finally) have a clear view of how people are using AI in the real world. Two major studies give us insight: OpenAI analyzed 1.5 million ChatGPT conversations, while Anthropic broke down Claude usage.

What users ask AI to do. Most conversations remain practical around seeking information or help with writing. But personal use is also growing fast. About 30% of consumer usage is work-related, and approximately 70% is non-work, with both categories continuing to grow over time.

Geography also matters. Anthropic’s data shows a stark divide. Coding dominates Claude usage at 36%, yet per-capita adoption varies wildly: Singapore users engage 4.6x more than expected, while India and Nigeria lag. National wealth still shapes access, raising the question: Will AI bridge gaps or widen them?

Equality in numbers — almost. The early gender gap in AI use has disappeared: women now make up 52% of ChatGPT users, up from 37% in January 2024. Developing countries are catching up fast, with usage growing four times faster than in wealthy nations, showing AI’s potential as a true equalizer.

AI as an assistant and a boss. More Claude users are handing over entire tasks to AI instead of collaborating. “Directive” interactions jumped from 27% to 39% in eight months. Educational and scientific uses are surging as AI gets smarter, signaling a shift from novelty to an essential daily tool.
