1. Meta acquires AI agent startup Manus for reported $2 billion: The social media giant is acquiring Singapore-based Manus, an AI agent company that can handle tasks like deep research, coding, and data analysis. Meta plans to keep Manus running independently while integrating its agents into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Following the deal, Manus will sever all ties with China — a move to preempt scrutiny from regulators.

2. Sam Altman admits AI models are "presenting some real challenges," hiring safety lead: OpenAI announced that it’s hiring a Head of Preparedness, a role focused on mitigating risks from increasingly capable AI systems, which comes with a $555,000 annual salary. Altman acknowledged that AI is starting to present serious challenges, including the impact of models on cybersecurity and mental health. The hire will be responsible for balancing growth and scale with safety.

2. Waymo is reportedly testing Gemini as an AI assistant inside its vehicles: A researcher discovered a system prompt buried in Waymo's app code, revealing Google's ambition to launch Gemini as an in-car companion. The assistant would be able to answer questions, adjust the light or temperature, and reassure nervous riders — but not control the vehicle. Waymo declined to confirm details but said the team is experimenting with features to improve the rider experience.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Why everyone’s gambling — and how AI could pour fuel on the fire.

The rise of the “bet it all” economy. Prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi, which allow users to bet on the outcome of real-world events, have exploded in popularity — they processed over $40 billion in trading volume this year alone. Add in meme stocks, NFTs, and crypto, and a pattern emerges: young people are piling into any outlet that offers asymmetric rewards. But why?

A trapped generation. Younger generations have Maslow's basics covered: food, shelter, and safety. But the path to meaning, purpose, and belonging? Largely blocked. Previous generations found fulfillment through career advancement, home ownership, and building wealth. Today, all three feel out of reach — real wages have barely budged in 50 years, The Atlantic called the job market 'hell,' and home prices are nearly 6x the median income. So younger generations are betting big and hoping to get lucky — before AI takes their job.

AI is compressing the timeline. Every month brings news of AI conquering tests or tasks that used to require years of training. Even traditional strongholds like medicine, law, and software engineering are at risk. For younger generations, the math is changing quickly: why work hard for a career that might not exist in 10 years?

But it’s not all bad news. New technology doesn’t always shrink the labor market — it often expands it. The internet may have killed print advertising (a $65 billion industry at its peak), but it also gave rise to digital advertising (now worth over $700 billion globally). AI will likely do the same: replace some jobs, transform others, and ultimately create entirely new opportunities that didn’t exist before.
