Perplexity makes bold Chrome bid
ALSO: How to generate music with AI

Welcome back, Superhuman. The game is changing. As the barriers to building (and copying) software vanish, distribution is the new battleground for many Tech and AI companies. Two recent examples: A Head of CEO Content job listing at PayPal pays up to $236k annually, and another job listing for a Vibe Tweeter at career platform Handshake pays up to $8k per month.
Speaking of tweeting, Sam Altman and Elon Musk definitely don’t need any help writing viral posts. Altman and Musk attacked each other on X yesterday in a heated argument, as the rivalry between the two went up another notch.

1. Perplexity makes audacious bid to buy Google’s Chrome browser: The AI search engine startup has made an unsolicited $34.5B bid to purchase Chrome, according to a Reuters report. The bid exceeds Perplexity’s current reported valuation. As regulatory pressures mount, Google may be forced to sell the browser to a future bidder — an outcome it would likely go to great lengths to avoid. Perplexity is no stranger to bold bids, having previously attempted to buy TikTok’s US business.
2. Microsoft wants to give Meta a taste of its own (recruiting) medicine: The Windows maker is trying to poach Meta’s top AI talent, and offering multimillion-dollar pay packages that match the enormous offers Meta itself made to researchers in recent months, according to internal documents seen by Business Insider. Insider’s sources also claim that “multimillion-dollar on-hire bonuses for AI talent are becoming more common.“
3. Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 now supports 1M token context window: The OpenAI rival announced a 5x increase to the context window for its Sonnet 4 model, which refers to the amount of text or data an AI model can process in one go. Sonnet 4 can now handle around 2,500 pages of text (which could translate to hundreds of documents) or entire code bases with 75,000 lines of code or more.

FROM THE FRONTIER
Will the consulting industry survive the age of AI?

Made with Midjourney
The $300B consulting industry has survived recessions, tech bubbles, and countless "disruptions" over the decades. Now, some observers are making the case that AI might be the arrow that finally sticks.
AI models threaten the business model. Many consulting firms have built their business model around charging by the hour. But as AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude compress weeks of analysis into minutes, billable hours start to evaporate. According to Tom Rodenhauser of Kennedy Intelligence, "You charge for time, and when time goes away, you have to change the commercial model."
A pivot is already underway. McKinsey recently slashed over 10% of its staff in what the Financial Times called the largest cuts in its history. The firm has deployed 12,000 AI agents, with over 40% of its revenue now coming from advising on AI and related technologies. Meanwhile, companies like Palantir and OpenAI are swooping in to steal traditional consulting work, helping businesses integrate AI into their workflows.
But some industry insiders are pushing back. They argue that consulting is a lot more than just whipping out flashy decks and research reports. Good consultants diagnose problems by asking the right questions in the right order to the right audience. The 'human touch,' they say, is the difference between crunching data and generating insight.
Of course, some might argue that consulting firms were never hired for consulting. Critics of the industry say that many management teams hire consulting firms to provide "cover" for tough decisions like layoffs, rather than generating any unique insight about their businesses. "No one ever got fired for hiring McKinsey," goes the saying.
