ALSO: How to use Claude AI in your Slack workspace

Welcome back, Superhuman. There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of new AI apps for work coming out every month. But which ones are actually being used by businesses? A new report lists 50 top apps based on where startups are spending their money — and there are quite a few surprises on the list.

1. Perplexity makes Comet browser free: Users can now access the search startup’s viral AI browser at no cost. Comet’s main feature is a sidecar assistant that answers questions, summarizes pages, and navigates sites in real time. Meanwhile, premium subscribers are getting access to an email assistant, early feature access, and the new “background assistant” that handles multiple tasks simultaneously via a dashboard.

2. AI frenzy lifts global chipmakers to record highs: Investor excitement for AI has sent chip valuations soaring worldwide, with the Philadelphia SOX Index and Asia chip stocks rising about $200B in one session. OpenAI’s $500B private valuation and deals with Korean chipmakers helped fuel the surge, while Intel’s talks with AMD and China’s AI plans added momentum. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics climbed 10% and 3.5%, while European equipment makers like ASML also surged.

3. Harvard scientists solve key quantum computing hurdle: Harvard researchers have built a quantum computer that can now run nonstop, solving a problem that kept previous machines running for only seconds. Qubits, the building blocks of quantum machines, often disappeared during use, causing data loss and system failures. Using special tools to replace lost qubits in real time, the new system ran for over two hours and could, in theory, run indefinitely.

FROM THE FRONTIER

New report from A16z shows which AI tools are attracting startup spend

Source: a16z

Venture Capital firm Andreessen Horowitz’s first AI Application Spending Report reveals where early-stage companies are putting their dollars. Using transaction data from Mercury, the report lists the top 50 AI tools startups can’t live without — and some surprise products made the list.

Experimentation is everywhere. Startups are testing multiple note-takers, coding assistants, and productivity apps at once, picking “their own flavor” of tools. New apps rise and fall at breakneck speed. “There’s a proliferation of tools,” says a16z partner Seema Amble. “It hasn’t just coalesced around one or two in each category.”

Copilots are leading the way. Despite the hype around autonomous AI agents, startups are still spending on AI tools that assist employees, helping them work faster and make smarter decisions rather than replacing them. Amble expects a gradual shift toward end-to-end AI agents as workflows mature.

The current frontrunners: OpenAI tops the list, followed by Anthropic. Vibe-coding tools like Replit and Cursor rank high while creative tools such as CapCut, Canva, Midjourney, Freepik, and ElevenLabs are also making waves — showing how quickly the line between consumer and enterprise in AI is blurring.
