Fashion accessory or phone replacer? Humane is a tech company founded in 2017 by ex-Apple employees and it’s been shrouded in mystery for the last 5 years despite raising over $200 million in funding from investors like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman — until now.
The company debuted its AI Pin device on the Paris Fashion Week runway this week with models like Naomi Campbell sporting the device on their clothes. The AI Pin is a wearable device that uses a number of sensors to enable interactions.
Here is Humane’s description of the new device:
“The Humane Ai Pin is the screenless, standalone device and software platform built from the ground up for AI. The intelligent clothing-based wearable uses a range of sensors that enable natural and intuitive compute interactions and is designed to weave seamlessly into users’ day-to-day lives. The device is privacy-first, with aspects such as no wake word and therefore no ‘always on’ listening, reflecting Humane’s vision of building products which place trust at the center.“
Not a lot else is known about the device but the focus on standalone features means it could try to replace smartphones in some way. The device is set to get a full unveiling at a November 9 event.

AI MODELS
Meta quietly unveils Llama 2 Long model that can outperform GPT 3.5 on some tasks
While everyone had their eyes fixed on Meta’s flurry of huge announcements last week that included new AI-powered chatbots and a new VR headset, the company also quietly released a new AI model called Llama 2 Long.
Here’s what you need to know about it:
Llama 2 Long is built on Llama 2 and has undergone ”continual pretraining from Llama 2 with longer training sequences and on a dataset where long texts are upsampled” according to Meta.
The model can outperform OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 Turbo with 16,000-character context window.
Llama 2 can also outperform Claude 2 with its 100,000-character context window.
What all of this essentially means is that Llama 2 Long should be very good when it comes to understanding and generating really long texts. A possible future use case could include summarizing entire books or producing new ones.
