TODAY IN AI

Character AI is getting a major multimodal overhaul. Source: CharacterAI
1. Anyone can now try Character AI’s new video model: The Google-backed role-playing platform is giving everyone access to AvatarFX, letting them generate up to five clips per day. That’s part of a bigger multimodal push: “Scenes” lets you insert yourself into interactive storylines with both real and imagined AI characters, while “streams” lets two AI characters chat about a topic of your choice. While not without its controversies, Character AI boasts some of the highest engagement in the industry — and it’s betting these new features will help lock in that lead.
2. OpenAI’s Sora shows up in the most unlikely place: If you haven’t used Bing in a while, it’s time to dust off those cobwebs. Microsoft’s search engine just became the first platform to offer OpenAI’s state-of-the-art video model at no cost — even beating the base version of ChatGPT to the punch. In order to access it, you’ll need the Bing mobile app. Once downloaded, you can click “Video Creator” and type in any prompt to generate a five-second clip.
3. Meta wants to fully automate ad creation by next year: The platform already lets companies use AI tools to handle some steps, like generating multiple variations of a single ad. But as soon as 2026, companies will be able to generate entire campaigns with nothing more than a product image and a budget. AI could unlock more personalization, too, including ads that are different depending on where in the world you’re viewing them from. It’s a seismic shift, considering 97% of the Instagram owner’s revenue last year was generated by ads.

What nearly 1 Billion job ads reveal about AI’s impact on the economy

There’s growing demand for AI-related skills, regardless of overall job growth. Source: PwC
For all the talk of AI taking our jobs, the reality might be a lot more complicated. That’s the big takeaway from a new analysis courtesy of PwC, which dug through nearly 1 Billion job listings to figure out how AI is impacting the workplace.
One cause for concern: Sectors where AI is being adopted more quickly show slower job growth than those that haven’t been exposed to AI yet. That seems to line up with another recent study, which found that listings for AI-doable jobs (jobs that AI can now augment or do entirely on its own) have dropped 19% in the last three years.
But that picture is complicated by the fact that AI is also “pioneering new forms of economic activity,” meaning companies are “using AI to help people create more value rather than simply reduce headcount.” In fact, job listings asking for AI-related skills grew last year — despite there being fewer job postings overall.
This makes intuitive sense: If your competitor uses AI to boost its workers’ productivity by 50%, you’ll need at least the same number of workers to stay competitive, even after implementing AI into your own workflow. The big takeaway is that no matter what happens to overall job growth, there’s going to be a big premium on AI knowledge, with 2% of positions last year explicitly asking for AI expertise.
