Software company stocks are tumbling. Global SaaS company stocks have taken a major nosedive this year, wiping out hundreds of billions in market value. Some companies, like Salesforce and ServiceNow, have dropped double-digit percentages. The reason: LLMs are allegedly eroding the advantages that had previously justified premium pricing for vertical software.

According to a recent viral article by Fintool CEO Nicolas Bustamante that’s gaining traction among tech investors, three moats that are crumbling fast:

  • Learned interfaces, built over decades, tend to dissolve when users can type requests in plain English instead of memorizing complex code.

  • Custom workflows that took years of engineering to encode can now be written as markdown files by domain experts in a week.

  • Public data scaffolding is now largely commoditized, as frontier models already know how to parse these documents from their training.

But it’s not all doom-and-gloom. For Bustamante, the market isn’t wrong to reprice SaaS stocks, but it is overlooking what will survive. For instance, companies with truly proprietary data may actually see AI strengthen their position, since LLMs need unique inputs they can't synthesize.
