🔍 Why Google isn't afraid of AI

ALSO: How to turn your ideas into interactive visuals with AI

Welcome back, Superhuman. Google could’ve gone the way of MySpace, the BlackBerry, or the CD-ROM — each sidelined by tech shifts they didn’t see coming. Instead, it’s reimagining its online search products around AI and putting them in the hands of 1 billion+ users. We talked to Google’s own Robby Stein to find out how.

TODAY IN AI

GitHub unveiled a new vibe-coding platform that’s available to Copilot Pro+ users. Source: GitHub

1. Microsoft unveils AI-powered app builder: GitHub Spark lets users build and deploy AI-powered apps with natural language prompts alone. The platform could be appealing to the 150M+ programmers who already use GitHub. The Microsoft subsidiary joins a growing list of companies racing to capitalize on the vibe coding trend. To give a sense of how fast things are moving, no-code app builder Lovable just crossed $100M ARR in only eight months, faster than “[any] other software company in history.”

2. Little-known startup drops state-of-the-art voice model: A California-based AI company called Boson AI just released a surprisingly powerful TTS (text-to-speech) model called Higgs Audio V2 that’s capable of cloning voices and generating multi-speaker conversations with frontier-level performance. In one video demo, a Korean speaker and an English speaker have a seamless conversation by using V2 to translate their voices in near real-time. You can try out the open-source model here.

3. Anthropic finds that LLMs can send ‘subliminal messages’ to each other: The Claude-maker teamed up with research group Truthful AI to explore an unusual phenomenon: Models can transfer information and even nefarious behaviors “subliminally.” For example, a model might pass on its preference for owls by sharing data completely unrelated to birds, like a random string of numbers. Even stranger, this odd behavior appears to occur across various data and model types.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Google’s Robby Stein on how AI is transforming Search

Google Search has been a part of our online lives since the ‘90s. Instead of letting AI shake that foundation, Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, is leaning into it to make the search experience faster, smarter, and more useful than ever.

Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:

Google has home-field advantage: People already trust Google and rely on it daily. With databases spanning 50B products and 250M places, the company is uniquely positioned to turn the web’s collective knowledge into powerful AI experiences.

SEO is changing but hasn’t disappeared: While AI Overviews can serve information more directly, Stein says users will always want to dive deeper by clicking on links and exploring sources in more detail. One thing that hasn’t changed: Trusted, high-quality content still rises to the top.

Users are already changing their search behavior: Around 1.5B people now use AI Overviews to quickly surface the information they need. They’re asking longer, more in-depth questions, and they’re using their cameras to learn more about the world around them.

Familiarity vs. novel design: Whether you’re a solo builder or a tech giant like Google, it’s important to respect the workflows and patterns that people are used to. At the same time, if you just stay too stagnant, you risk getting left behind. Big design changes can be good, as long as they lead to a “huge leap in value” for the end user.

Humans in the loop: An LLM can come up with a great idea, but product leaders still have to figure out whether it’s actually something people want to use. “You have new tools to amplify your decision-making ability, but I don’t think that’s the kind of thing you can outsource [to AI] — or you won’t be able to for quite a long time,” Stein said.
